About The Program

The John Adams Middle School Visual Arts Program encourages creativity, problem-solving, and self-expression through a California standards-based curriculum. Students explore a variety of artistic techniques while developing critical thinking and an appreciation for diverse cultural and historical influences.

Our spiraled curriculum ensures that core concepts—such as the elements and principles of design—are continually expanded upon rather than repeated. Students may join at any grade level and continue growing as artists.

Course Offerings

  • 6th Grade Exploratory Art – A semester-long introduction to visual art, where students experiment with different materials and techniques. This course emphasizes creative expression and cross-curricular connections, complementing an introductory engineering class taken in the other semester.

  • 7th/8th Grade Visual Art Foundations – A year-long course that builds technical skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, fiber arts, ceramics, and printmaking. Students explore a range of artistic styles and cultures while developing their own artistic voice.

  • 7th/8th Grade Advanced Visual Art – For students with prior experience, this course offers portfolio development, exhibition opportunities, and engagement with professional art spaces through gallery and museum visits.
